Inauguration
Hamsadhwani was launched on 18th. August 1990 to cater to music lovers living in Adyar Area of Chennai. The birth of this cultural organization, its inauguration by the Doyen of Carnatic Music, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, the blessings it received from the great exponent of Carnatic Music, Sangitha Kalanidhi Smt. D.K. Pattammal, who lighted the symbolic Kuthi Vilakku, all make us proud. Hailed as a “child prodigy” then by the former President Shri R Venkataraman, Hamsadhwani today is a mature cultural institution.

Hamsadhwani has been very fortunate that renowned and distinguished maestros like Lalgudi Jayaraman, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Maharajapuram Santhanam not only performed for us but also took keen interest in our development. During the 10th Annual festival, Reliance Industries through “Only Vimal” came up with a proposal to hold, in partnership with Hamsadhwani, performances of three top artists from North India, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Rashid Khan and Pandit Ajoy Chakravarthy and four artists of renown from South, the grand old lady D.K. Pattammal with three generations from her family, Mandolin Srinivas, folk artistes from Madurai University and a Harikatha by Revathi Sankar on Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbalakshmi.

A very interesting development took place some 12 years ago in the matter of a unique music festival, the NRI festival which is now an annual event with us. An exclusive event, where we give opportunity to talent abroad, the main artist must be an NRI. What started as an ‘experiment’ is now assuming great importance during the Festival season. We have about 50 NRI concerts between 15th December and New Year. The response is quite satisfying with an audience of at least 150 – 200. This is remarkable when you consider that about 50 sabhas in the city offer 3-4 concerts daily during the December festival. Hamsadhwani is indeed proud that we have not forgotten our folks who have chosen to pursue carreer abroad and do our country proud. We help them to strengthen their cultural links with India.
