Mr. R.
Ramachandran, popularly known as RRC,
the Founder Secretary of Hamsadhwani passed
away on May 24th. 2007 at an age of 83. |

| Born
on January 1, 1924, RRC did his schooling
and college in Chennai, A respected journalist,
he worked for various newspapers such as
Free Press Journal, The Indian Express,
The Economic Times and The Hindu. An ardent
cricket player, journalist and civic activist,
a founding member of the Civic Exnora movement
in Chennai, he served the Tamil Nadu Cricket
Association for many years, apart from editing
Straight Bat, the monthly cricket magazine. |
| After
his retirement, RRC's love for the cause
of music led him to start Hamsadhwani
in South Chennai in August 1990. Ramachandran
was presented the 'Kalaimamani' award
(in 1999) by the Tamil Nadu government
for his promotion of the arts. His service
to the cause of music earned him the Kala
Sevak title of the Maharajapuram Viswanatha
Iyer Trust and the Sangita Seva Niratha
title given by the Delhi Music Trust. |
| His
innovative and creative thinking was responsible
for Hamsadhwani starting its extremely popular
NRI music festival in December, which enables
musicians from abroad to perform in Chennai.
His acceptance of emerging trends without
compromising on traditional values won the
regard and affection of young and old alike
to draw one and all into the fold of the Hamsadhwani
family. |
